Anthropic Backers See Stakes Approach Ten Billion Dollars

Early investors and late-stage giants stand to gain billions as the AI firm prepares for a potential two-trillion-dollar public debut.

The figure of $965 billion stands as the current private market valuation for Anthropic, a number that has transformed the portfolios of its earliest supporters. While the company is widely expected to list publicly later this year with a valuation that could reach as high as $2 trillion, the financial windfall is already evident for both early-stage and later-stage investors. Even before the official stock market debut, the stakes held by various venture capital firms and individual backers have grown into massive sums, according to data reported by Bloomberg.

Among the most notable holders is Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google. Schmidt participated in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021, a period when the startup was valued at just $461 million based on PitchBook records. Over the years, his initial investment has matured into a holding of approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, that modest percentage translates into a stake worth nearly $10 billion.

Later-stage giants have also reaped significant rewards from their heavy commitments. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year. At that time, the company was valued at $183 billion. That substantial bet has since appreciated to $17 billion. Analysts suggest this position has the potential to double in value once the initial public offering is completed.

Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D funding, has poured more than $1 billion into the AI lab over time. That cumulative investment is now valued at $14 billion. Meanwhile, Sequoia Capital entered the picture more recently, backing the firm for the first time earlier this year when the valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning their capital has already more than doubled in value.

Other prominent names in the technology investment world have also seen their stakes balloon. Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. The firm subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company, resulting in a holding now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to establish a new venture capital firm.

Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, made an even earlier entry. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since grown by more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion. As the company moves toward its public listing, these figures highlight the extraordinary financial trajectory of Anthropic's backers.

The upcoming public listing is set to be a defining moment for the AI sector. With the current private valuation already at $965 billion and expectations of a $2 trillion market cap, the stakes for all involved are higher than ever. The transition from private to public ownership will likely solidify these gains and provide a new benchmark for the valuation of leading AI laboratories.
