Lab Giant Confirms Hack as Patient Records Exposed

Quest Diagnostics disclosed a cyberattack targeting a key platform used to schedule tests and handle billing.

A major healthcare breach has been confirmed by one of the largest medical laboratory networks in the country. Quest Diagnostics announced today that unauthorized actors gained access to its systems, potentially compromising sensitive information.

The company detailed the intrusion in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, stating it discovered the attack on Wednesday. The breach involved Quanum, a platform utilized by doctors and hospitals to order lab tests and process billing. According to the filing, the unauthorized access allowed for the retrieval of certain patient records. Quest has notified law enforcement and launched an investigation into the matter.

The incident adds to a growing list of cyberattacks targeting the healthcare industry throughout 2026. Recent months have seen significant disruptions involving medical device makers and pharmaceutical distributors, highlighting the sector's vulnerability to financially motivated criminal groups seeking ransom payments.

Quanum is a widely used tool, with Quest reporting that approximately half a million clinicians access the system across thousands of locations in North America. A case study on the company's website illustrates the potential scale of data stored on such platforms, noting that a single health system with more than 6 million patients can generate hundreds of millions of associated medical documents. However, Quest has not yet specified how many patients were affected by this specific incident.

The company's public notice acknowledges that some patients' protected health information was taken, including personal information and patient records. Quest is currently investigating the specific types of data involved. It remains unclear when the breach began or if any hacking group has contacted the company with demands.

This event marks the second significant security incident for the lab giant in recent years. In 2019, a third-party billing vendor was compromised, resulting in the loss of 11.9 million patient records. The current investigation into the Quanum breach is ongoing as of October 23, 2026.
